Cancellation notice period

Hi all,

I have a gym membership with a local council run gym. I joined a 6 month contract back in March. I no longer wish to have the membership, but when i wrote giving them 30 days written notice, i received a letter stating the membership will be cancelled at the end of November, basically so they get 2 more payments out of me.
When i rang to query this they said the contract i signed stated i had to give 3 months written notice to cancel (which annoyingly it does) but before i signed the contract i specifically asked if after the 6 months i wanted to cancel how would i do it, he just said put it in writing, made no mention of 3 months.
Yes, i know this is a lesson of thoroughly read whatever you sign, but i thought that satutory rights meant you can cancel a contract with 30 written days notice (as long as your not in your tied in period)?

Is there any way of getting out of the 3 month notice period?
