PayPal: Should I give my Maestro debit card or Direct Debit?

I've just signed up to Paypal but haven't put in any financial details yet. I have a choice between with putting in my bank account # and sort code (which i presume is Direct Debit) or put in my NatWest Maestro debit card details.
I haven't got a credit card. Just a NatWest Maestro debit card.
Is there a difference between Direct Debit indemnity and the Direct Debit guarantee?
Does Direct Debit give any more protection than Maestro debit card?
How much more protection do you get with a credit card than Direct Debit?

If you just have direct debit as payment if you have no funds in your paypal account then when you pay for something it can take up to 10 days for payment to be recieved by the seller so you will have to wait longer for the item. You need a card as back up funding to stop this happening but I am not sure if it has to be a credit card or if they will accept debit.0
