How often should a boiler be serviced?

My mum has a combi boiler in her bungalow. How often should it be serviced? Does it need doing every year? I think it may be due one.

I also have mine serviced once a year (contract with British Gas) but would say it probably depends on the age of the boiler.

Does it need doing every year?
The plumber who did ours said it should only really need servicing every two years.
