Money off vouchers what is the legal stance?

Do supermarkets have to take them?

If they do take them what about actually buying the product the voucher was for?

I've had problems with Tesco accepting internet vouchers in the past when there was a relaxation on that rule at our local branch. They were accepting any money off voucher for any product? The place as you can imagine was heaving with customers who'd printed off up to £30 of dog food vouchers which the store was gleefully accepting, even opening special tills. Accepting photocopies as well!

Come 4pm they stopped any photocopies
Come 7pm a "technical difficulty" was preventing them accepting any vouchers.

Why did they accept them? Legally do they have to? Can you force them to take them even copies.

My beef was my wife printed some off and was told they were photocopies. We don't Have a photocopier.

Most vouchers are redeemable at "participating retailers", it's obviously therefore down to the individual retailer whether they accept or not?

Whilst I dont use vouchers/coupons I can understand why they are clamping down if people are using 30 or so or using vouchers and not even buying the product.

There is nothing to force them to accept any vouchers.
  • But was told they Had to accept them due to some legal loop hole that someone proved. They continued taking them until a 'technical fault' prevented receipt, yes they couldn't scan bar codes, wonder how their groceries scanned...

They don't have to sell you anything. If they don't want to accept the voucher, you can't force them too.
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

There's probably somewhere written on the coupon/voucher in the small print that they reserve to withdraw/ammend the vouchers as they wish.

Vouchers aren't legal tender, so no one can be forced to accept them.
