Equivalent advice site in the USA?

A self-employed American lady needs your help.

She is in New York briefly, and was meant to return this weekend to her home town in the Midwest. She cannot do this because she accidentally dipped slightly over her zero limit into an unrequested/unapproved overdraft. Charges have been applied for every purchase she made after this occured, even though they were all very small transactions.

She has gone about $150 into the red, and the bank has applied over $600 in charges. My first thought was to refer her to this site, but of course this site is centred on UK affairs (and the British banking system is an entirely separate issue since the big court action). She has of course asked the bank to stop this, but they are entirely unsympathetic and have just told her the standard "cut up your cards" speech. As you can see, she is not a compulsive shopper needing to curb her crazy spending habit and the bank's decision seems entirely disproportionate.

Please recommend:

any USA sites like this one (I tried Google but most results point back to here or Yahoo Answers)
any knowledge you might have about the US system in relation to a case like this
any knowledge you have about international banking standards which would apply here.

Thanks in advance.

Dave Ramsey is a financial guru in the US and has his own site. Looks like he has forums too but you have to pay $9.95 a month although it does offer a free trial.

  • I would add to the excellent post made by tiff that you would have to investigate local laws and federal laws but there have been one or two class actions in the US and the issue is becoming more widely reported..

  • Tiff - Thank you very much! I will pass on your tips. All I could find was [as a new user, I can't post links apparently!] reclaimbankchargesusa dot com, but it looked a bit fishy to me.

natweststaffmember - Yes, I found a number of news reports: seems like something similar is beginning to stir over there...

Thanks to you both for the speedy replies.
