Anyone have any experience of this at all?

yes you can
firstly decide where you want to go
if you want yllas/levi then you can get fights either from various charter flights that will mean you will have to be there for a week, or you can fly to Helsinki with either Finair or blue one and get a flight to Kittila - the other option is for you to get a ryanair flight to tampare and the overnight train to kolari - you have to watch your timings between tampare airport and the train station - you will than have to get transfers to yllas or levi - a taxi from the airport to levi is about 30 euros to yllas it will be a lot more, however, there are buses that are there to match the arrivals of the flights - you should be able to get flights for around the £200 mark during term time
to get accommodation you can book yllas with destinationlapland.com or for levi go through levi.fi
the other option is somewhere like saariselka - easiest way is flights london - helskinki - ivalo then get a bus or taxi to saariselka itself
for accommodation go via saariselka.fi
I have looked into doing saariselka independently, the flights are cheaper if you can go mid week but you are still looking at around £300 each for the flights, the cabins you can get from about £700 upwards - if there are 4 of you wanting to go out of the school hols then it is actually cheaper going with inghams, if it's during half term then it's cheaper DIY, it'a also cheaper if there are more of you as the accommodation price per person comes right down
TBH with you, with the deals that are on at the mo (with inghams during school term) you will probably find it cheaper to go with inghams rather than DIY
if you are wanting to do a shorter santa break then if you can get flights for £200 to kitilla and then a short cabin rental then you may find you can do it cheaper than the £500 each that inghams and last minute are charging for the short breaks but look into what else the inghams/last min deals offer as you may find them a better deal
there are other resorts but I can't help you on those, but look for flights so kussimo for resorts such as Phya and Salla
good luck and let me know how you get on0
