Can anyone help
I live in North London and need double glazing
My old windows are falling to peaces, and rather than get scafold to patch them up, I would like to invest in new windows.
Trouble is, being a first time buyey I can only afford about 1500 - 2000 pounds..
Anyone got any ideas ?
If need be, please send me a private message if you able to help

This is what someone told me:
Get one of the big companies to come round and measure up and give you a written quote.
Use the measurements to order the units direct from a manufacturer.
Find someone who works for one of the big companies to come round and fit them for you at the weekend. Get a price per aperture.
Might help if you do a lot of the donkey work, hire a skip, do any touching up that needs doing etc.
Even then you might struggle to do it under £2k, I reckon it might be possible though.0 -
if they arent all openers i think you can squeeze it to 2 k
i rcently had a front door and a window quoted for £1600 i said 750 thats it call me if you can do it . if not dont bother.

freestyle,
do you have trade depot in your area. i know they are in basingstoke and southampton. they have standard double glazed window for around 200 each. they are UPVC but don't know the quality. if you can fix urself i guess you can save a lot. alternatively chk in ur local paper and u may find someone selling their wrongly ordered / spare windows for £50. in this case u need to wait to get all 6 windows of your required size.
don't know how much this will help but i can understand the difficulty in spending ur hard earned money...

Not sure if this info is useful to you but here goes ...............
My mother just had her sash windows replaced with new double glazing.
She got 5 UPVC windows which were made to measure for her 1st floor flat - supplied & fitted for £2700.
Here's the good bit :
Because she lives in a 1st floor flat and there's a public close (walkway) down the side of the building the council share a responsibility to look after the stone work of the building (in case masonry falls off and kills someone i guess).
She contacted her local council office where a nice council bloke came round and said the window surrounds needed replacing as they were falling to bits and she would be entitled to claim for a grant.
He also said the grant wasn't directly for the cost of the window surrounds ........but the surrounds get replaced when new double glazing gets fitted anyway !
The council gave her a 100% grant for £1175 to cover the repairs as she is over 60 (just).
I paid the other £1525 as it was so cheap.......BARGAIN !0 -
I have recently had several windows replaced but I live in Devon, so obviously prices are a lot less. One thing you should remember is that now you have to have a certificate from FENSA to certify the windows were fitted correctly. Apparently if you don't have this when you come to sell your property this could cause problems.
I do hope you manage to find someone to do the work for youWhen man sacrifices the Love of POWER for the Power of Love, there will be peace on earth.0 -
Little late in the thank you's but here it is !
All my windows are quite big.
2000mm x 1800mm each with 3 openers
Think I'm out of luck.
I doubt the oil price is helping either0 -

Actually you require a certifiacte from building control to certify they are fitted correctly. If the company fitting your windows is FENSA certified they can give you this certificate without the need for building control. hope this helps.Total Debt October 2007 - £28387 :eek:Didnt do very well but plucked up the courage to contact CCCS in March 2011Total Debt March 2011 £30750:eek::eek:Total Debt September 2012 £16215Debt free date July 2015Thanks CCCS for making this achievable, I wish I had contacted you sooner! :T0 -
Hi freestyle,
dont know where you live in North London but have you tried the local free papers?
There are lots of adverts in them. I have just had a quick look through mine (also North London) and this is just a sample of adverts in there.
Homecare: 020 8366 2410 - 6 windows supplied and fitted for £1100 - K glass as standard. they give free quotations. Fensa reg
Everbrite: 020 8443 5551 5 windows from £876 Fensa reg
Do a little local research yourself is my suggestion.0 -

Just to confirm ....
You need SEVEN windows
Each one measures almost 7 feet long and 6 feet high
Each one has 3 openers (is there also 1 or more fixed panes in each window?)
The very very cheapest place for windows near me (Derby) would want at least £350 for each of these (based on 1 fixed pane so total 4 pieces glass per window) - so 7 would be £2450 - supply only.
That doesn't include having any of them TOUGHENED which is required by law if the window sill is less than 900mm (I think it's 900) from the floor.
Fitters normally charge about £60 a window (up here) but for big buqgers like these I'd expect it's likely to more like £100.
To be honest can't see you geting lower than £4000 and probably nearer £5000 (and that'll be for the cheapest product available)
Keep us informed - I'm intrigued with what quotes you'll get !There are 10 types of people in the world. ‹(•¿•)›(11)A104.28S94.98O112.46N86.73D101.02(12)J130.63F126.76M134.38A200.98M156.30J95.56J102.85A175.93
