Just bought a oldish house with the old BT socket, the type where the phone is permanently wired in? not sure if the line is connected as you cant plug a phone in! Do BT replace these for free or can i do it? i have a new master socket ready.

BT will fit a master socket for free in this situation IF there isn't one in the house.
Have you checked that there isn't one lurking somewhere?
If BT engineer turns up and finds you have one somewhere already, the cost will be £125.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
Have checked, wire from the pole goes in the box, nowhere else.0

When you order broadband, they will HAVE to fit a master socket, otherwise you will not be able to receive the service.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0

House will be let out, just wondered if new tenants would have to pay for a master socket. Thanks.0

DO NOT attempt to change the socket yourself as that part of the phone system belongs to BT! If you interfear with it,you will be breaching their T&C's & the Telecommunications Act.They may charge you or even bar you from getting their services!

'It was like this when I bought the house' solves that problem.
Why on earth do you think that every electrical shop sells master sockets?? So you can give them to the BT engineer when he calls? I think not...British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

If it's an old style socket then it's got old style wireing...do you know the colour combinations that have been used?I doubt the owner has access to the exchange to trace the line back or chang pairs.Different if your NTE5/CTE5 is !!!!!!ed & you can change it & get away with it,but in this case I'd get it done by a licenced phone (ie,BT) engineer.
But what do I know! I'm only a Telecomms Engineer!0 -

No probs :beer:What I said above is an extreme measure & I've only known it to happen once.it's just I've had a lot of experiences sorting out DIY phone extension messes! And some of them can be a nightmare!0
