File names on camera photos

Hi
I have a Minolta Z1 and I went on a week's holiday taking photos every day.

The camera creates folders automatically every day (or maybe every session) and each folder is individually uniquely named of course.

However the pics inside each individual folder are named in an identical consecutive format i.e. PIC0001.JPG, PIC0002.JPG, etc (always starting with PIC0001)

The problem is that I cannot put ALL the photos in one folder and have a long slide show as there would be duplicated file names!

I dont really fancy renaming the files manually and was wandering whether tehre is an easier way out?

Any ideas?

Have you tried the scanner/camera wizard built into XP? When copying over pics, you can tick all the ones you want to copy, give them a name, and it'll re-number them all for you. And if you go back at a later date and add more to the same folder, it'll recognise the number system and continue it. Very clever, and another benefit of XP, over 98. Mind you I don't have such a good camera as the Z1 - but it works for mine.
    Good luck.

I use irfanview all the time, and had never noticed that - thanks! So, there you are Doublespresso, my method will work on future copying over from the camera, but shammyjack's will work best for stuff you've already copied. Plus it is such a useful utility to have...
