Who Supplies our Gas/Electric
Well moving into a flat in 2 weeks the flat currently has someone in it and we are renting through an estate agent.
This may be a really really stupid question but how do I know who currently supplies the flat with Gas, Electric and Water? or does it not matter?
Can I simply phone up any company currently available in our area and use them?
For Example:
Electric - Southern Electric
Gas - British Gas
Water - Southern Water
Also are there any companies to really stay away from?

You have no choice for water - the company that supplies your area is your supplier. Make sure you notify them you are in residence.
With gas and electricity, whoever is supplying your flat is initially your supplier. Your estate agent should be able to tell you which company, and there will often be a letter addressed to 'The Occupier' from the firm(s)
You can then switch to a supplier of your choice.
Ensure you read all 3 meters when you move in, and get it recorded with the Estate agent - or you could end up paying for the previous occupant's gas, electricity and water!0 -
Thank You for the info. Very Helpful

If you phone any supplier and give them the MPAN (Elec) and MPR (Gas) numbers from the meters they will be able to tell you who the current supplier is.Je suis sabot...0

Only problem with that is it very unusual to have the mprn for gas on your meter - if it is anywhere it should be on a tag on the pipe going into the meter, - also though it is called the meter point reference number it actually identifies the property that is supplied as opposed to the meter. The gas meter is identified by the serial number which is usually located on the meter above or below a bar code beit a label or somewhere on the dial.
I cannot comment on electricity but having looked at mine I cannot see an MPAN number onI am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0
