It sounds like the laser is out of alignment. This can cost as much as much to repair as replace unfortunately.
You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.

have you considered taking it apart and cleaning the lens with a cotton bud and meths/alcohol?

I'm sure davilown will be aware but please be careful about opening it up. They usually have a warning label attached to advise against this sort of thing, especially where lasers are involved.;)

I'll move your thread over to the 'Techie Stuff' board, where the techie experts will help you.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

It's usually a reverse jigsaw puzzle, figure out which screws hold the casing together, find any hidden ones under stickers etc. unclip and then figure out how to get at the lens. If it's a flip open cd player you may be able to see the lens without wielding a screwdriver and just clean it. Don't take it apart unless you're prpared to take the risk of not being able to get it back together or finding it's full of ping!!!!its. ;)
