Worth taking a trip on one of the steamers across Lake Windemere from Bowness.
I have only been from Bowness to Lakeside where there is a visitor centre once you get there but you can alo go the other way up to Ambleside
They have a website here http://www.windermere-lakecruises.co.uk/
A similar sort of thing operates in the North Lakes at Ullswater. http://www.ullswater-steamers.co.uk/
I cant recommend Youth Hostels but I stayed here last Summer and would definetly return. Fantstic breakfasts, great friendly service. http://www.highfoldbedandbreakfast.co.uk/
Hope this helps and have a great time0 -
Depends on what you are coming for but most the youth hostels are very good, most hotels in the lakes seem expensive but you can often get some good late deals. in terms of places to visit. i like keswick and ambleside of the major towns. some good attractions to visit include:-
https://www.puzzlingplaces.co.uk in keswick (if its wet)
https://www.lakelandmaze.co.uk near kendal if your coming in the summer
https://www.goape.co.uk in grizedale and grizedale forest in general
https://www.duckysparkfarm.co.uk if you have kids or https://www.surf-the-turf.co.uk for more excietment or https://www.holmescales.com for outdoor stuff.
https://www.trotters.com for the animals
if your a member of the national trust or english hertiage theres loads of places to go.
if you like histroic houses pick up a lake district historic house leaflet from you local tic for lots of offers.
https://www.kankku.com for off-roading. windemere lake crusies or the keswick launch are good.
free things to do include the dock museum in barrow, lots of walking mountain biking.
but you must visit the best ice cream in the country at Holme Farm near Grange over Sands.
But again it all depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend. me i'd just go walking and have an ice cream from the ice cream farm or wellington jerseys in Cockermouth.
Regards

Hi
We stayed in Coniston Holly How Youth Hostel last year. Can recommend it - very nice & friendly hostel, five minutes walk into Coniston. You can take boat trips on Coniston Water.

You could also check out the South Lakes Wild Animal Park. It has an amazing Tigers they run the Sumatran Tiger Trust trying to save tham and get them back into the wild. The Park is run like a great big farm. there are balconeys into the enclosures so you gat a really good view of all the animals. Feeding times for the animals is really good. check out www.wildanimalpark.co.uk
A good place to stay is the Lonsdale hotel in Ulverston it has deals on the web so if you check there site you should get some deals. We found Ulverston by accedent and have fallen in love with the place it's way out on the west cost about 20min from Coniston a real market town with loads going on.

We also stayed at the newby bridge hotel which is near the haverthwate rail way which is a short steam railway that takes you up to windermere. our little ones loved it you can get a 2 for 1 deal with the Aquarium of the Lakes which is good on a bad weather day!
