Hiya I'm new to this website, and what a great website it is :money:
Im looking for some information regarding my Income Support claim as a couple. I'll give you a little info about me and my situation.
I'm in receipt of Incapacity Benefit and Disability Living Allowance I get higher rate on both Care and Mobility. My Dad gets Carer's Allowance for looking after me. My partner recently lost his job to having to much time off due to him having to lend a hand to my dad as my care is now to much for one person but we can only get one person to claim the Carer's. I was advised to claim for Income Support as a couple so we did that and have been awarded that. Can you help me regarding were my partner stands some people say he need to seek work but I've looked at Jobcentre website and says you can get it if your caring for someone doesn't mention you need to be in recepit of Carer's we understand doing it this way thou partner won't get NI paid what do you think?
Oh also we have claimed on our insurance for our secured loan but they say as partner needs to be seeking work but I've explained what JC website says wht do you think about this also?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

If you're the Income Support customer then your partner doesn't have to sign on. But he can if he wants.
That would mean you'd have to give up your Income Support & he could sign on for JSA instead, covering his stamp in the process, collecting the JSA benefits due and keeping your insurers happy.
At least I think that's how it would work. You're maybe best having him call the claims line on 0800 055 6688 to discuss.0 -
tr82!! Thanks for replying, he can't get JSA as he won't be seeking work as he can't because he now helping my dad with my care needs as to much for one person so not available for fulltime work.
I submitted proof to Insurance the other day regarding the eligability of Income Support to bits one from Jobcentre Plus website and one from Welfare Rights website both stating the same that you can get IS if caring for someone who is on DLA middle/higher doesn't mention you need to be on CA to get it do you think they would accept this?

Where you recieving DLA when the loan PPI was taken out?
If you were you have no chance at all of claiming at all on the PPI but you might get a refund of the insurance costs.

There is a scheme called Home Responsibilities Protection, which covers national insurance contributions for your state pension if you're a Carer ... but I'd guess he'll qualify for that automatically because he's on your Income Support claim already.
Do I think your insurers will accept it ? Unsure, depends how your policy is worded but if they've got a clause which states your partner has to be actively seeking work I'd guess not. No harm in trying though.

Sunny thanks for reply. I was in receipt of DLA when Insurance was taken out along with the loan with GE Money but I was also working at the time as well. Since I left work we never claimed on it as I was entilted to IB as was unfit to work. But of course because partner can't claim any benefits as he not seeking work we made claim as he had to leave work to help care for me. Why do you think me being on DLA would effect pay out? The claim is in my partners name.
Thanks
Tr82! I will have a look at the scheme you mentioned thanks. The loan company did tell us we needed to provide them with proof that my partner was either recieving JSA, CA or IS so we have sent IS award letter in. As you said no harm in trying they said they would need bank statements showing that IS is being paid in so fingers crossed they pay out.
Thanks Again0 -
The problem i can see is that it is your dad that is claiming the carers allowance. There is only 3 reasons that you are entitled to claim IS, your are a lone parent looking after children under 10yrs old, you are ill or disabled or you are a carer. As your dad already claims carer allowance for looking after you your husband cannot claim IS for this reason. That's why he has been advised to claim JSA instead. As far as i'm aware its one carer person, that all the DWP will look at. As they are paying someone CA they will say that your husband cannot claim IS as a carer because you already have one that we pay CA for.
That's why i think they are telling you to claim JSA....0 -
Concernedebitor! You are correct in what your saying regarding my dad get CA and that only one person can claim this. No-one is telling my partner to go on JSA he was on it but when I submitted IS claim he was advised to close JSA to IS could be processed as a couple as obv we couldn't get both. The category for getting IS does say lone parent, sick or disabled or caring for someone which he is but as I need 24hr care its too much for one person and there are certain things I won't allow my dad to help with.
I have spoken to Welfare Rights today and they have advised my partner can claim IS as a 2nd carer, so thats good to hear I hope anyone is finds themselves in the same situation as me maybe needing more than one carer there is help out there even if not claiming CA.

Thats a new one on me, you can only have one official carer to my knowledge, can you give us full details for all the disabled people here and carers who care for more than one person, if you can have more than one carer surly you can claim carers for caring for more than one person?
Thank you, sunnyone0
