hello, i do all of the above but dont put weeds in because they will seed and when you get that lovely soil next year the seed will already to germaniate and before long that lovely soil will be covered in weeds that you put in your compost bin. happy composting.:T

For those who dont know this already... in most areas of the UK you can get a compost bin (or two) from your council at a reduced rate (anything from about £6). This website: http://www.recyclenow.com/home_composting/ is really easy to use - enter your postcode and you can order your bon directly from your own council online.

    Cheers

I've never been able to make really good compost, i think you have to get the right mix??
    This may help you:-

    http://www.compostguide.com/

it's an American site, but still relevant for UK gardens. Features a great list of suitable/unsuitable ingredients and explains how to get the right mix.

The above link should help. :)

From experience, chop up ingredients for faster composting. "Turn" regularly (I try to do this every couple of weeks in the spring/summer). Grass clippings really get the compost going if it needs a boost. Build a large pile (metre cubed) to ensure the centre stays hot. Don’t bother adding holly or waxy leaves as they’ll take forever to rot. NEVER add meat or persistant weeds!

    Have fun!

I would like to go a lttle bit more "green" and recycle my compostable matter, problem is I have very small garden and find the smallest 'bin' is 330 litres which is much too big, Also as I live alone I don't produce that mush vegetable waste from my kitchen. Any suggetions would be appreciated

I have a very similar problem. My main reason for wanting a composter is to reduce landfill rather than to generate loads of compost for the garden. But I can't site a large composter either. Something around the size of a normal dustbin would be ideal for me, but I haven't found anything like that so far.
