Scottish Power charged us money even though we're not with them

Hi,
Scottish Power visited us recently and we agreed to move over to them for our gas and electric. However, because we already owe money to our existing supplier this got cancelled. We've had letters confirming this.
However, on checking my bank statement I noticed that our current supplier have taken their money for both gas and electric, but scottish power have also taken their bit, even though we're not with them.
My wife phoned them and they agreed this was a mistake and they've said they'll refund us. However, they say this can only be by cheque, which will take 7 - 10 days (working days I expect, so up to 2 weeks) to arrive, and will then take a week to clear. This means we won't get our money back for up to 3 weeks. This to me is wrong, they took the money directly out of my account, why can't they put it straight back in.
Am I within my rights to demand an immediate refund, direct into my bank account? If not, am I within my rights to demand interest be paid, and what amount should this be?
I've now cancelled the direct debit which they wrongly setup (and didn't advise us to cancel). But I am going to be £50 short this month because of this.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Doesn't matter, I've sorted it
I just called my bank and they've recalled the funds, so should get it back as soon as their system updates.
