hi,
on my brown upvc door the skin is coming away very slightly in a couple of places from the glazed unit on the exterior - at the bottom of the glazed unit and i dont want water to get in.(when theyre made theyre stuck with tape then siliconed)
question is i want to remove all the original silicone then re glue with something so the skin is properly stuck to the glass again, what product will stick/securely bond upvc to glass please?
then i want to re silicone around the glazed unit to finish it off neat.
am i doing it correctly or could i just take the old silicone out then use say window frame sealer to stick the upvc skin to the glass and use this instead of a bead of silicone all in one go? its got to be securely bonded.
would this stick the upvc door skin to the glazed unit? rip out old silicone - fill in gaps with this - then re silicone?

any ideas please???????

Allen673, The product you have indicated from Screwfix (Evo-Stik Sticks Like S***! Adhesive) is only an adhesive and won't seal very well as it'll contract when curing. What you need to use in a combined adhesive and sealant like the Ceresit Flextec Adhesive Sealant(Screwfix 36933) which is both an adhesive and sealant. This product also has the added bonus of staying flexible which will greatly aid staying sealed with expansion and contraction of differing materials as the temperatures change. Its more expensive than what you were proposing to use but will give you much better performance given what you're using it for.
Hope that helps you.0 -
im afraid whatever you use will come apart again due to the expansion of woodgrain upvc but if you want to try use sikoflex to stick panel to glass this silicon over but be warned its sticks like the proverbialif you think peoples advice is helpfull please take the time to clicking the thank you button it gives great satisfaction0

what if i use this siakflex 221??
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1-TUBE-OF-SIKAFLEX-221-BLACK-POLYURETHANE-SEALANT_W0QQitemZ150375056722QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CommercialVehicleParts_SM?hash=item23030d4552&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
could i use this to stick the skin to the glazed unit and also use it instead of a bead of silicone around the glazed unit?
could do it all in one go then making sure all gaps are filled etc.
i will remove all original silicone then use this to finish off neatly????0 -
Apologies allen673 as I didn't fully read your initial posting. I blame the fact on it being so late in the night!
Now that I see the uPVC door is actually coloured brown you do have a problem if at any time of the day its in direct sunlight especially during the summer period. To digress a little I've seen many a brown uPVC door jam in the frame, especially with multipoint locking, due to the excessive expansion in hot direct sunlight.
If it is indeed in direct sunlight at any time then what I suggest is a high performance adhesive that stays flexible to stick it together and a high performance low modulus flexible sealant to seal around it, after the adhesive has had time to adequately cure of course. You will probably still experience problems with it but not at the frequency of a normal dual purpose adhesive and sealant. Its caused by the low expansion of glass in heat with a very high expansion of the brown uPVC material in heat (the dark colour unfortunately absorbs it very efficiently). Try to do the work, especially the sealant, on a hot day with the sun on the door, with adequate time allowed for it to cure whilst still hot and expanded. Then the sealant will squeeze into the gap when it contracts rather than pull apart when it expands. If this isn't possible, due to the impending cooler weather, then reapply the silicone on a hot day next summer.
With the above in mind the type of products to use would be something like Evo-Stic Ultra Power Adhesive (Screwfix 85825) with Ceresit 7B Low Modulus Silicone (clear) (Screwfix 84823) as the sealant.0
