DFS 4 Years free credit??

Hi All,
I hope this is in the right place, if not could someone redirect me..... Thankyou...

As me and my partner are now in the situation of paying off all our debts thanks to claiming back missold ppi, with lots of help from the lovely people on this site! We now would like to buy a sofa as our current one has had it (it had had it over a year ago!) and seen as our monthly out goings are going to be considerably smaller we have worked out we can afford a new one!! Yay!!

Anyhow enough babbling! Has anyone delt with DFS before? We want to do the pay monthly thing and are also debating wether to get the new scoth guardy thing they offer and are wondering if its worth it? as its £150 extra, but they say if we get it then they come and clean up any stains apart from Curry and Acid! But is it as easy as phoning them and them coming to sort it or do they drag there heels? We have a 2 year old and although we sit at the diningroom table for meals, something always ends up in the livingroom at some point!!

Any thoughts, or experiances much appreciated!

Also if this is the wrong place I do appologise!!

Check other threads on here for DFS, the only one i remember was very negative on them and the shoddy workmanship.

From my experience, the payments will go on for longer than the sofa. You get what you pay for.
  • I bought 2 sofas from dfs last year, with 3 years interest free credit. Also took the protector as the sofas are cream suede. Have had no need to call dfs out to fix anything on the sofa, as anything spilled on it has come straight off, including wine! I have a 7 year old who spills everything and the sofa is still immaculate.

We did this when we brought our first house. Having to pay thousands on other stuff when buying our first we were glad to have the free credit. Realistically, no credit is free, its built into the price! But it was very handy, no problems with credit checks and the sofas we got are of good quality.

The 4 years free credit is actually 3 years of repayments, with a break in the first year. We brought our sofas in September 2006 on a 3 year interest free plan. Sofas delivered in December, first payment in September 2007 (a year after purchase agreement) and paid within 2 years. I'm glad to have cleared it now but it did help us out a lot.
  • Check out local furniture shops who may negotiate for cash - then come back and say what you think of DFS prices!
  • 12 years ago we bought sofas from dfs they had to be changed 3 times due to the poor quality, and we paid over £2000,as i said 12 yrs ago,and even then after 4 years they were knackered, the so called free credit is built into the price.
My advice would be to get sofas from argos, they are half the price of dfs and the quality far better plus you can get some months on 0%,and atm £20 back for every £100 spent in vouchers
  • The mathematics says everything.

The problem you have is that even brand new, your furniture is not worth 50% of the price you paid for it. Why ? you ask. Well, it is because you don't pay anything for a year and then have another 3 years interest free. The thing is that there is no such thing as interest free in the real world. DFS don't wait for a year and then collect £30 a month from you for another 3 years, they get paid up front from a finance company and they actually receive about 50% of the selling price. The internal interest rate is about 30% per annum.

If you contact DFS, they will not discount for immediate payment. All they want is people to buy on credit.

What you are really signing up for is an expensive loan (circa 30% per annum or more) which has a payment holiday for the first 12 months. You effectively borrow £500 and pay back £1000 but the way they structure it is to hide the finance charge and say it is interest free.

The furniture you buy is not worth half of what you pay for it.
  • Bought our suite 13.5 years ago from DFS (£3,600) still going strong - that said it is TETRAD and also was stocked by John Lewis. You get what you pay for in the end.
  • We bought our sofa, chair and foot stool from dfs which cost us just short of £1500 we finish paying for it in March. We also paid extra for the scotchguard and our sofa ect is still in excellent condition. It's stuffed with feathers which I do fluff everyday and we have 2 children and a dog.

I would not hesitate to use dfs again and would recommend them if I was asked but as others have said shop around or if you can hang on a little longer the xmas sales are just around the corner

    HTH;)
