EBay Advice

I have been using EBay for a while now & have been lucky enough not to encounter any disagreements until now & was looking for some advice (a friend pointed me in the direction of here, great forum btw)

I recently had an item on EBay & the bids was expecting it to reach about £60 approx. The bids were going niceley with a lot of interest & had gone up to £45 when all of a sudden someone bid £100. As this is slightly more than what the item is worth everyone else who was bidding then lost interest.

Now the auction has ended the winning bidder has contacted me to say he thought he was bidding in US Dollars.

As he is in America is seemed a fair argument & asked him what he would like to pay after he had checked exchange rates himself. That was three emails ago & I have heard nothing.

Not too sure what the next step should be?

Any help would be greatly appreciated & now I have found your forum I do intend to contribute.

You can do either of 2 things:

    1. Request his contact details from EBay and give him a call to see if you can resolve things.

    2. File a non-paying bidder report through your EBay account - in 7 days you will get your final value fee back and be able to re-list your item.

Personally I would go with (2) as it sounds as if they are not interested in paying. And you will have a nightmare chasing someone in America.

This seems to be happening a lot. The Americans being so egocentric think the US$ is the only currency in the world.

Anyway would tend to agree with VH but I think I would try to contact again.

I would also make sure you leave a negative (be prepared for one in return). It is also fairly obvious it is £ this is how it looks to a US buyer:-

    GBP 4.99.

    Good luck

I agree with the above, file a non paying bidder alert and if no response, leave them a neg.

In future, go to preferences and set them up to receive bids ONLY from accounts in the country you are selling from (unless you specifically want to sell to other countries of course).

I had an american, win a playstation console off me. :-/

He then realised, it wont work in america - different mains supply. :-/

He e-mailed me, this is exactly what he said :

"Hi just won your console, its not gonna work over here. What you gonna do about it ?.
I suggest we just call it quits"

I sent him a reply saying I was gonna invoice accordingly. >:(

    Blimey, what an arrogant git!

What did he say after you invoiced him? or did he just not reply?

With a non-payment dispute the seller and the buyer can mutually agree not to proceed with the transaction. This means that the buyer does not get an unpaid item strike and you will still get your final value fee back.

However given that they seem to be ignoring you I would do as suggested above and leave them a neg.

Unfortunately I have found with EBay that even if you are the nicest and most understanding person in the world, you will still encounter people who you cannot please!
  • thanks for the advice.

I will email one more time & see if he replys.

if not I will leave negative feedback & file an non paying bidder report.

I had a similair problem last year. A buyer bid and won something and then actually paid me by paypal but instead of pounds he paid the same amount in dollars which is of course only half of which it should be.

I e mailed out immediately and got an e mail back saying that my auction clearly showed that I accepted foreign bidders and accepted paypal so what was my problem.

I explained as politely as I could that I do accept foreign bidders but he had converted sterling into dollars which means he actually had to change my invoice. He has also overlooked the very large print that said for overseas buyers I only accepted payment via paypal in UK sterling funds. I also pointed out that despite showing all the shipping details in the auction he had filled in the invoice to show UK shipping and not US shipping! I reimbursed his payment and raised another invoice showing the correct amount for the auction and US post and packing.

I got another e mail back saying that he obviously wouldn't want it at that price and he didn't appreciate us Brits trying to rip off his countryman..

Strangely enough while I considered how to respond to that he got NARUd. so I got my fees back straight away before even waiting the 7 + 7 days. I don't know why he was NARUd as he only had two previous negs, but he had bought a lot of stuff when he bid on my auction so he was either a scammer or the other sellers between them had put in 3 NPB strikes.

As per th eother suggestions stick your ground on this one, don't cut him any slack. If he won't pay what he bid for the auction and by your approved method then start the NPB process. He only needs three strikes and he is off ebay for good.

I let the whole thing drop when I got into a bit of a row when I called him ..just that !! :-/

I sent him a photo of the world map and reminded him, how small america is in comparison to the rest of the world. ;D

I also reminded him, that out of a world population of 6.5 billion people, there were only 295 million americans and asked him not to be so rude in future !! ;)
