Right i have a new laptop with an s-video port- what can i do with it.
is it possible to use it to record tv? i.e. like a video recorder for tv im not going to be in to see?

I would imagine that in fact it is just an output socket rather than input meaning that you can display your laptop screen on a TV or compatible screen. S-video can be used for input but I would very much doubt you have this if you didn't ask for it.
If you do want to record tv on your laptop you most likely need to get a usb TV converter and then the appropriate means to record the TV (Windows media edition for example)0 -
gavin_fran has pretty much said it all. you should have a dedicated 'video in port' - usually an s-video port like you havem or a composite (round female, usually yellow).
Your laptop also may allow dual-view functionality, meaning you can output certain applications to the tv-out e.g. you could watch a DVD via the tv out, while browsing the internet on your laptop's screnNo reliance should be placed on the above.0
