Paypal, have I been cheated?

My first post on here.

Hi, I recently have sold several items on ebay, I am very new to this. Firstly I sold a mountain bike, and I stupidly went along with the cash on collection that the buyer suggested. I was short changed £10, but luckily I had his mobile number and I got him back to give me the full amount.

Next I sold a PS3 game at a buy it now for £30.00. Someone bought it and payed via pay pal and I delivered it. But nothing has gone into my bank account. So I checked my pay pal account and sure enough the payment is there but is "on hold post now". I posted it a week ago and its still on hold. I just realised that I can perhaps speed up the on hold pay now thing by selecting it as posted so I have.

But not only that, the amount from the buyer is £28.78. That is £1.22 short of the £30.00 it sold for. What has happened? Can the ebay buyer type in an amount of their own choice once they have won or bought it now? In my experience of buying im sure that you cant, and I dont see why someone would want to rip me off for £1.22. Although some people do things like that and the figure being so close to £30 someone might do it as they can get away with it without people noticing.

Or is it a fault on my part? You seem to have to set the postage as Free on all games/dvd on ebay, so thats what I did when I was putting it up. But I think I may of used the postage calculator and typed in the weight of the game and the postage I was going to use which may of given me a figure like £1.22. Has this then been deducted from my payment?

Or is it simply that paypal themselves take a cut of a received payment?
Im so confused on this. Any help much appreciated.

As you're a new seller Paypal will hold the funds for a while. As soon as the buyer leaves positive feedback, the funds will be released and you can withdraw them.

Paypal charge a percentage of the received funds to pay for you using their service (the servers, staff etc don't pay for themselves).

Ok thanks allot. I had to know as im going to be selling several other big items and I don't want to getting robbed blind. Just one question if they dont leave positive feedback (they should seen as though I sent it first class) will I still have to wait as long?.

Funny thing is that I started selling stuff because eBay had a free listing day and now I owe eBay over £40 plus pay pal takes that £1.22. So that's the catch lol. But it really is the easiest way of selling things, if you try on forums people are usually just not serious or troll it.

    Anyway thanks allot pal. :D

Firstly welcome to the ebay board on MSE, please have a read of some of the other threads as we cover quite a lot of ground. We also have threads for other sites like ebid, Amazon and play you might want to look at .

There is also a post of tips here:

Lastly, before you list anything check the fees you pay to list, make sure you are not paying for enhanced services that you don't need to use.
