Congestion Charge

Hi, a theoretical question for you.

I was driving in London today and was using the central ring road to avoid the congestion charge (It's a route through with congestion charging on most of the streets that run off it). Its clearly sign posted as a route to avoid the congestion charge.

In Victoria they are doing road works and you are forced to take either one of the side roads to get around it, both of them being congestion charge roads. There is no warning of this apart from digital sign posts further along stating there are road works in Victoria.

I went turned into a congestion charge road and then took a turning that got me back past the closed road. Fortunately the time was 5 minutes after the charging period so I won't get a fine.

Out of curiousity if it had been in the charging period would I get a fine for doing this?

Thanks

Not as long as you keep to the diversion routes.
The diversionary routes have been designated as a free through route for the Congestion Charge, and providing motorists keep to these routes they will not incur a congestion charge

Well, that's in theory. Unfortunately, despite following the signs I received PCN notice for 25th September, and fortunately a cancellation notice the next day saying "...a processing error has been identified in relation to a known diversion due to road works. As a result of this error, this PCN has been issued incorrectly.....we have now cancelled the PCN"

I use this route everyday and received another PCN for exactly the same place, and on contacting customer services, received a standard email saying I would have to appeal:confused:. Same circumstances, following the diversion, exactly the same place just different day. Seems I'm not the only one:

    - TFL have made an error and others have also had PCN's incorrectly issued. They should rectify the situation instead of expecting everyone to appeal - their mistake! :mad:This diversion is scheduled for 8 weeks.. 39 appeals to go:eek:

It looks like the official diversion route is the other bank of the river. (Millbank)

Proberbly worth an appeal if the signage wasn't clear. Clearly stating where you were coming from and going to.

ta comstock sorry for delay in replying. signage wasn't clear due to traffic volume. could hardly see it mate. appeal in waiting for reply they have 56 days. got help tho and looks good according to this test case from the appeals website. worth a look for anyone who has been done via a diversion. lol http://www.patasregistersofappeals.org.uk/StatReg/
all to do with being forced into the cc zone when you never ever meant to enter. digits crossed.
  • A couple of months ago I was forced into the CC zone because of roadworks. I saw the CC sign coming up, but the junction I was on was straight forward only so I couldn't turn off and had to go into the CC zone. I just paid it because I am weak.
  • thinks thats the problem everyone pays up. well most.
have a look at the appeals site before paying. lots of good advice mainly the test cases. worst case scenario is you pay the original fine.lol http://www.parkingandtrafficappeals.gov.uk/cchome.htm
  • sorted.lol. pnc cancelled so please don't pay any pnc if you get a fine for being diverted "against your wishes". at least an appeal is worth it.lol
