Help!  Windows not responding ...

Options
I'm having real problems with Windows '98 this am. When I try to go into it, the egg timer is up for about 2 minutes before it eventually appears. It then "freezes" on me and won't let me do anything. I sometimes get a dialogue box with the message "There is a problem sending the command to the program". It's been slow for a few weeks ... could this be anything to do with the kids being off school?

Can anyone help me please?

do the kids browse the internet? if so then probably...

it could be large amounts of ad ware and spyware slowing it down.. or a virus.. have you ran a virus scan, spybot search and destroy, adaware.. etc??

then again if you can't get that far you can't..

have you tried booting in safe mode to see if you can get on? (F8 when booting..)

Yep ... run a virus scan and don't have any. I have had spybot and adaware installed for a while, so why has it only slowed down recently??

have you been keeping spybot and adaware up to date and scanning regulary (at least once a week) because they don't stop you getting spyware (well spybot does a bit) but they do help you find them..

it could have just slowed down recently for many reasons.. have you installed any new software lately? is your HD getting full etc??

Hi again. Yes, do scanning regularly and everything up to date. Loads of space on hard disk. One thing it could be is the fact that I installed MSN Messenger a few weeks back. To date, it's been OK, but I suppose it could be to blame?

I've uninstalled it for now and will see if it makes any difference.

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks, but all my Windows problems have now been resolved. I had a nasty Trojan virus which slowed my computer right down 'til eventually it was virtually unusable. As it was a particularly difficult one to get rid of, I called in an expert and had a complete overhaul ... it's now running like a new computer!
