in Cutting tax
Hiya,
I'm a student and I have been working over the summer as a receptionist at a university hall of residence.
In May, I also started work in the university shop. I only earned a couple hundred pounds from this and these have been my only jobs this tax year.
When I got my first payslip from the rescptionist job I was shocked to see I was taxed at a BR 20% tax code.
In my first payslip, where gross pay was £1013.72, I was taxed income tax of £202.60. In my second payslip, where gross pay was £1348.75, I was taxed income tax of £269.80. And in my third payslip, where gross pay was £569.76, I was taxed income tax of £114.00.
Is this correct and if not am i entitled to some of this back and how do i go about it??
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated because I am so ignorant about tax!!
Thanks!!

You can't have 2 tax codes. So if you have 2 jobs, one gets the tax code, one gets taxed on everything (as the first job gets the free allowance).
Have you quit both jobs? If so you should have 2 P45s?0 -
thanks so much for your reply.
I had the shop job first and I was not taxed at all on this. Tax code for this was 603L.
I have quit the receptionist job but i'm still working for the shop.
i was under the impression i would not be taxed until i earned over £6000? but i am not very informed on tax0 -
Ok a few pointers.
603L is the tax code meaning you can earn £6035 before paying any tax. This tax code is actually wrong as its last years but you can sort that out another time.
The reason you can't have 2 jobs both on 603L is because the allowance is per person, not job. When you have job, it assumes you will earn over your allowance (the 603L) so you will have used it all up, so the second job you get taxed on everything. Obviously this isn't the case for you.
You can get a refund, but its unlikely they will give you it until end of tax year when you know how much you earned over the year and can work out how much you can get back.
You might want to get onto the back of the shop though as the tax code for this year is 647L, 603L is last years.0 -

No - you get one twelfth of your allowance each month so the allowances are spread out over one year. If you earn more than approx £539 each month you would pay tax. Under that and you pay no tax.0 -
:TThat's a great help
Thank you so, so much for that-you've explained everything!!0 -
thanks jem16,
but if i earn over approx £539 in one month and earn less that £6045 overall in the year am i still entitled to the tax back from that month?0 -

Yes, but as previously advised you might not get the refund until the end of the tax year.loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.0 -
Have you been issued a P45 for the job you have left?
If so contact the tax office and see if they have the details. If they do as them to issue a tax code to the shop which includes previous pay and tax details for the receptionist job. This will then generate any refund due at this point in the year which will come via your salary at the University Shop. It will also resolve the problem of you being on last years emergency code at the shop.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.
