NHS Dentist Charges

Wish we had England's dental charges here, me and OH were almost £150 when we went to the dentist! He's added things like perio work and amalgram fillings, I only need 1 filling I'm sure! It's between 2 visits, and our teeth aren't THAT bad I hasten to add, it was a new dentist as we left our last one due to distance, and the fact that he didn't give me a filling in that tooth because it wasn't deep enough?
They didn't give us an app for 2 1/2 months after our first visit either. Got to pay upfront too. Sickner! hehe0 -
You can't get white fillings on the NHS unless its for front teeth.
Not correct in detail but broadly true in practice.
the NHS says we can restore a tooth with any suitable material we like as long as it is clinically justified. They just wont pay us any more for doing so. The decision lies with us entirely.
Therefore if a tooth can be restored with Amalgam and be made clinically fit then that is the standard required by the NHS and the rules have been satisfied. You cannot specify another material just because you want it.
There is nothing to stop an dentist using the more technically demanding, more expensive material except that he would be better off giving you a tenner and telling you to go elsewhere
The looks of a tooth bear little relevance to the NHS.
Should a dentist choose to stretch the rules to breaking point you could argue that they could choose amalgam for front teeth too. However I havent come across anyone who would try that, and I suspect wouldnt stay in business long if they did:rolleyes:0 -
Hmm I've always had white fillings in the past.. (back when I had an nhs dentist)£2 Savers Club 2011 (putting towards a deposit

esio trot, out of interest how much extra is it for white fillings? I will be wanting these, not that I've found an NHS dentist yet lol.
it's a lot, here anyway, thoughIthinkIessentially have to get them done privately. I need a lot of fillings after not being to the dentist for a long time (10 years ) and the total cost for all white fillings will be about £380 - with one of those being a deep filling at about £120.0 -
Hmmm? I had a check-up a while ago and paid £16ish. He said i needed a filling but would do an xray as I might need another and then he woyuld do the filling(s) the next time. I went and he said I needed 2. I got charged £110 for these 2. They were both white ones but he said he'd cgharge me the non-white price for one of them. It's an nhs dentist but it sounds to me like I've been ripped off. Is there any way of checking this or should I just call them and ask them?
Thanks,
BobAnd if, you know, your history...0 -
If you go private like me it would cost £50 per white filling.
Considering you only live once, and its your health, what's 50 quid for a white filling.

I agree. I pay £60-£90 for a white filling (Private) plus £45 for a check up, £20 for x-rays and £20 for a scale and polish. Luckily we can claim most of this back thru Denplan.0 -
this might sound a stupid question, but can you request to have your teeth taken out in a hospital whilst put asleep? I am petrified of the dentist but need some teeth taken out, i really dont want to be awake when they take them out and dont mind paying extra. does any 1 know how much this costs?0

Laura I dont know if this helps but many many years ago, I had to have a lot of treatment, lots of fillings I think (this was a long time ago) but I asked to have a valium injection because I was dreading it so much. My mum came with me to make sure I was ok and to take me home. I remember absolutely nothing about the treatment, just came round a little woozy and weepy!
Maybe you could pay to have this? Again not sure if you can get on NHS but as far as I remember I was private.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01
