Background searches normally have a lot of spammy results.

I suggest using firefox with no script on when browsing these sites.

There are some programs that install backgrounds and screensavers for you, again try and stay away from those or be careful if you do use them.

I normally use a picture I have taken or search for a specific background, e.g. "fringe background" if I was looking for a background relating to the TV show fringe. Try google image search when searching for backgrounds, you can quickly see what is on offer.
