Hi, I think the union is necessary as I am a nurse, and would hate to be unprotected if anything went wrong. Petro; I might be able to cut down a bit, but I need it to get to and from work, rural area so public transport not too good and very expensive.

Is it possible to do agency work as doesn't this pay alot more than normal nursing pay?

Also what about the possibility of being a school nurse? You would only work term time then?

Not sure about the viability of these, just throwing things into the ring! :D

Also with the car, perhaps this is a bit drastic, but could you sell your car and buy one with a smaller engine size that drinks less petrol?
I have a 1.1 punto, and my OH uses it for his computer repair work, which means out in the field, often to appointments 20+miles away, and our petrol bill comes to around £80pm.

I think I get all I am entitled too. Because my earnings have gone up, my tax credits have gone down dramatically. It has occurred to me that I might be better off getting a job in the local supermarket and getting maximum tax credits and then I could get rid of the car, which costs somewhere between 145-170 a month run assuming no repairs are needed, and whoops that didn't include road tax.

And ironically I have to reapply for my post at the local hospital, and if I don't get it and there will be more applicants that posts, might face redundancy. But cross that bridge a bit later!!

If you have to re apply for your post at the local hospital would you consider discussing at time of application changing your hours so that you are off work every half term and or summer holidays.

Where I used to work the company used to do this for mothers/parents and they only worked term time which was less of a strain for childcare. Which in theory would mean that you wouldonly be working part time throughout the year so your benefits would be uped also..

Worth a thought and you have nothing to loose by asking your employer.

the C/C is that for Credit Card? If so can you change it 0% if it is not already, in addition can you find a 0% cc that could also cover remaining of loan and pay it off with the 0% ( depending you have no penalties) rather than using a consolidation loan?

Am a bit confused about this?
You don't mention any debts apart from your monthly outgoings.
So would you be able to break down any debts including aprs, and amounts owing, so that we can have a look at the bigger picture, and work it out from there.

I am not being very clear!! Now that I am being open about it,it is all tumbling out. No-one knows about this!!
    I have a
£2200 overdraft,(which is gradually increasing. ) No repayments,
5500 on lloyds card at 0% intersest
    860 on virgin 14.8%
    3600 egg 1.597% a month (does that mean 1.597% x 12 =19.1%!!!)
    3666 the cahoot loan @ 10% I think

Repayments on all of the above, before interest free period is about 280-300 pounds. I looked at a loan from northern rock and I could pay it all back at £177 a month for 10 years at 5. something % interest.

Are you using childcare vouchers through work? these will be cheaper

    http://www.busybees.com/calculator.php

My water bill is outrageous, but in the south west it is very expensive, neighbours who have switched to a water meter are paying half that so I have appleied to have a meter fitted.

I had a quick look at the busy bee site. Not sure that I understood it. I can't claim anything from tax credits as the breakfast club my daughter has attended is for less than an hour a day so they don't have to register.
This may sound feeble but one reason I don't like to work 5 days a week in the holidays is that I don't want my daughter at a minders or club five days a week.
    thanks

    Hi, thanks,
It's funny when employers are desparate they seem to a lot more flexible. Now that there seems be a shortage of nursing posts rather than nurses, we are being told the more flexible we are the more likely they are to be able to redeploy us.
When my application for working on the bank/agency comes through I am going to try and do extra nights. The children don't seem to mind so much if I am working while they are asleep.
  • I don't know how feasible this is, but would it be possible to 'pay' your 16y/o to look after your 7y/o for a couple of days a week during the holidays. It would be cheaper than childcare and would mean they could stay in their own home, and I know when I was 16, £10/day, or £20-30/week during the holidays would have been great. Would only work if your 16y/o was reliable and they got along, but it might be worth discussing with them.

Actually 16year old is lovely and will help out and in the past I have paid her. However I know she is hoping to find a job herself this summer, wants to save for school sixth form ski trip. If push comes to shove I will work at night!
Thanks for thinking about it on my behalf
