Any ideas - probs with kia Sedona

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to ask, but know the lovely MSE people are full of so much knowledge that you may be able to help.
My Kia Sedona 2.9L has started to overheat quite quickly and when the temp gets up to about 3/4 of the way on the dial, the excelleration seems to just stop. If i pull up, turn the engine off for a couple of secs, turn it on again the temp goes back to normal

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be before i take it to the expensive dealer for them to look at.
The car's water had gone quite low, so i filled that up, but still no difference.
Look forward to your ideas

possibly a faulty water pump..

It could just be an air lock due to filling it up.
Dip the oil, if its got little white bubbles in it, head gasket.
The only things the fact turning it off and on lowers the temp. Shouldnt go that low that quick (may also suggest air lock though?).
Acceleration stopping could be due to a sensor kicking in (is there any lights?).0 -
Thermostat, Is it old style mechanical or an electric one?
Would be top of my check list.0 -
Thank you for all your replies, checked the oil today, don't remember seeing any bubbles in it, so hopefully its not the head gasket as that sounds quite an expensive job.
Not sure about thermostat the car is a "55" reg so would have thought it would be electronic but really not sure
No lights are coming on, if it is an air lock how can i get rid of it. i only do very short journeys so doesnt always happen.
Thanks for your help, phoned kia but they cant fit the car in for over a week, so will just keep doing my short journeys, may take it to a little local garage to see if they can find the problemDebts to deal with Cap 1 £3996.83 £3923.43 (0%), Next £1252.21 £1211.85 (0%) Very £294.88 £282.64, Studio £266.11 £256.11 (0%), Halifax card £277.17 £466.01:mad:0 -
In cars that i've had problems with airlocks before, theres normally a plug or cap on the top of the radiator that can be removed. Take that off and if you cant see water, top it up (probs better with coolant and water to right mixture as it's getting colder)direct.
(ONLY OPEN WHEN ENGINES NOT BEEN RUNNING, YOU WILL GET SCALDED OTHERWISE)
You could also try removing the expansion tank cap and running the engine.
Heres something I found also. Sounds about right.

As it says, there might be a leak somewhere (not going into the oil by the sounds of it so cylinder head gasket should be ok).0 -
You quite clearly dont have a clue about cars so dont do anything and dont wait a week for Kia.
Ask a small local garage to look at it ASAP. Do not drive it til then. If its a gasket or water pump you risk extremely damaging your car0 -

or at least a mechanically minded friend who can come look at it, but yeah small garage is your best bet0 -
