final meter readings and utilities

Options
I can't remember how to do this ... we are moving out of our house and I know we need to take final meter readings. We have told gas, electric, phone people when we are moving out - do we leave the details of the companies we use with the new owners so that they can call with their first readings or does supply get cut off? Doh sorry, my head is a mess! What if they want to change supplier?

I think normally gas and electric are not cut off. We notified our supplier in advance that we were moving out and ditto for the supplier we wanted where we were moving to (it so happened to be the same supplier our vendor was using and also our present supplier so one phone call in advance sufficed) These days it is normal to supply details of utilities including phone numbers in the vendors documentation prior to exchange of contract. On the day of the move I read meters at our old house and the new house and telephoned them in. No further hassle.

I don't remember anything in the stuff prior to exchange relating to this ... I suppose they had the latest water bill, but I don't remember anything else. I'm worried now!

Gas, electricity and water are not cut off. The law is such that these utilities are immediately supplied to people who move into a property whether they be new owners or new tenants.

You don't have to leave details of who your gas and electricity are supplied by as the new owner can ring up with the Meter point reference number either 0870 608 1524 for gas or the local electricity distribution company, and get the suppliers. However unless you are a nasty person there is no reason not to leave a note somewhere with who the suppliers are.

My note was in the meter cupboard on top of the electricity meter.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
