Should TV remote controls light up when you press the buttons?

I brought a TV remote control from AVUKltd and it isn't working. They havent replied to my mails and the phone number is 0870. There is no light whe buttons are pressed and it doesnt work with the tv anyway and weve tried 3 different lots of batteries

I rang to ask what should I do about returning the item and she said it is going to be the TV that is faulty not the remote as those tvs infra red lights do not last very long at all so if I return it without wanting a refund I have to pay the return costs and they will deduct 30% from the refund. She said thier remotes do not all have lights on but they still send a signal. She said they have one of the tvs there the same so they will test it with that. They do not sound trustworthy actually

We know its not the TV now because she has just got a new one herself from the shop and and its working fine but I just think they are going to make the excuse thats its working and just refund less. The fault isnt mine yet im having to pay returns costs and looks like a reduced refund and thats if they actually refund
Thanx

    Easy way to check infa-reds.

Do you have a mobile phone with a camera? Or a web-cam or a camcorder.

Simply point the remote control infa-red at the camera, press a button and see if the infa-red flashes/strobes a light.

If it doesnt the remote isnt sending a signal out.

it came with no instructions at all and when I rang she never mentioned it. Its been posted now though but I'm sure if it had needed a code she would have told me when I rang coz she really didnt want me to have to return it coz I didnt want a replacement

No, infa-red is just light, the human eye can't see it though, but optical devices can see it.

If we are talking about one of those 'magic 4-in-1' remotes then you will need to set it up 1st time you use it (or whenever you replace batteries). The manuals for stuff like this is all over the internet. But if you have sent it back already I guess that's pretty much pointless.

Just thought I'd add here that this company av uk ltd are not answering he phone or replying to emails since I returned the control, it was bad enough to get through on monday. I just knew when I got to speak to them on monday there was going to be trouble I could tell the woman wasnt trustworthy. Bad reviews found too on the net since about them, I did look before ordering but couldn't find any then. They did run remotesrus but I think thats out of use even though its still on the net so avoid that site too if anyones thinking of using it

I'll put a warning on the rip vent or rip off board, I think its going to be rip off though because I don't think they are going to refund

Don't understand either that the phone number on the site is for a different address in sutton coldfield but on the conformation email it had a different number a Birmingham one yet I had to return the control to sutton coldfield
    Thanx

I thought all remote controls had to be set up before using them. Obviously not ones that come with the item when you buy it, but any RC you buy separate has to.

I just remembered I bought an ex-rental tv for my kids room and I bought a remote from av uk. The remote changes channels but my son has just told me he can't get onto the menu with it. We didn't programme it either.

Not the one we ordered. Her original was completely broken during a room swap in uni halls so it needed no code or anything to set a new replacement. Shes got a new one now and its working fine without no code setting but theres no sign of anything from avukltd as yet and I don't think I'll see that refund. I just knew the way the woman spoke on the phone

I've done this a couple times and it got me refunds/replacements. Email the company with basically a nice worded threat that you are going to inform users on a 'well known uk forum' about this company.

They may not be bothered, I've done this twice now as a last resort and funnily enough I got what I wanted.

    Good Luck!

I just managed to get through on the Birmingham number and they said they have not recieved the return posted Monday. She asked if I had sent it by special delivery and I said recorded. Then she asked did I return it for a replacement or refund, not sure if that should really matter which I want but it does to them anyway. Then she said its probably because we will be doing the returns tomorrow and if it's there they will check it before refund and if its not faulty they deduct 30% for inconvenience. First she said if I'm refunded it will just go into my account then I asked shouldnt I get an email conformation about the refund and she said oh yes we can do that. so I'll hope to get an email tomorrow or latest Monday. If they say they havent recieved it or say its not faulty because it most certainly was as we knew for sure when my daughter got another new one and that is working fine. I will then send them an email and mention I will be warning others via a website then because someones got to warn people
    Thanx
