Go to Filehippo.com and get Firefox 3.5.3 free from there. (Browsers and Plugins section)

I find FF great and get much less cookies etc. than I.E.

Another one voting for FF :)

Once you have it installed you can look in Tools->Addons and find some good stuff

Just to be different ! I used FireFox for years but have been using Opera lately, find it much faster and I particularly like the "speed dial" facility on it.

Would suggest you try Thunderbird as your e-mail client too.

To switch browser, just find the one you want, download it, install it, then click on that button instead of the ie one every time you go online. Most browsers will prompt you in installation or on first run and ask if you want it to be the default browser.

Not meaning to be rude, but by your asking this question, I kinda get the feeling you're not *the most* techie person around and I have to say, as a kinda-techie myself, I've never found the need for any of these wonderful "add ons" people rave about with FF.

I use chrome 99% of the time - lighter, faster, easier to use.

The only disadvantages of moving away from ie are
    1) whenever you change machine etc, you have to install the new browser again, or else go back to using ie
    2) limited devices will have compatability issues with other browsers
    3) certain web apps have issues talking to other browsers

For the bulk of web-browsing, however, there's not disadvantage - and it's easiest just to leave ie installed anyway, so it's there if anything's annoying enough to need it.

Oh, meant to say - just install a bunch of different browsers and try them out - only you know what works best for you.

I switch between chrome, firefox and safari. I hate IE and refuse to use it unless I have to (4OD last time I used it only worked on IE). If I'm on someone else's computer I download the other browsers for them and make one of them the default browser. I'm trying to convert the world one person at a time to stop using IE.

I'm glad you are making the switch!

No need to stop using IE . Download FF, Chrome or whatever and use alongside IE . You can have one or all as you choose.Tile windows and have different browsers at same time.

Just a note of caution, I too like 'Opera' but be aware that a few companies (my stockbroker for one) find it incompatible with their system.

I switch between FF and SRWare Iron which is a chromium derivative like Googles Chrome but has better privacy and an adblocker.
