Editing this as I catch up with the posts.

Sorry! I just saw this. 2ndtimerounder - I'm not religious but my positive thoughts are on their way to your mum and to you, as it would have been a huge shock finding her like that. I hope the medics can get to the root cause and help her get through this.

I love watching flames but quite happily can watch them in a woodburner.:D I really don't see what the objection is for them to replace an open fire with a woodburner, you need to cart coal or wood for them both:confused: but the woodburner/multifuel stoves are around 60% more efficient at heating the property and retaining residual heat, which could only be better for their property, and themselves if they end up living there. The fire surround wouldn't even need to be removed one could be fitted onto the hearth with a flue going up the chimney so would even be easy to remove again.

We were told that when they get around to doing the renovations and installing heating that it would be oil. They don't want coal or logs of any description - too messy, too much work for elderly or infirmed. And I have to agree that the prospect of chopping wood on a pouring winter's day doesn't sound that appealing, nor does barrowing logs from the lane to the back of the house. Wait til you've done that a few times, you'll see what I mean. Not forgetting you've twice as many steps as me to get into your garden from the lane. OK, so I have twice as many as you at the door to haul them up into the house, so all's fair. :rotfl: I guess if you really wanted to spend a grand installing solid fuel burner and flue liner on the guarantee you'd remove it or risk losing it if they decide it's time to install the heating then you could speak to them, I'm just not prepared to spend money on a house that may need to be vacated as soon as they need it back. I've had too many landlords over the past 8 years to risk fully putting my faith into any of them.
I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.
