fitted carpet not "tucked under"

Hi there just had some carpet fitted. in the living room it's tucked under at the edge but in the dining room it's just been laid up to the edge - not very successfully. they've laid gripper rods but I think the problem is caused by beading which could be original - house is about 1890. Does this prevent the carpet being stretched and pulled over the gripper rod and tucked under. they're coming back tomorrow as there wasn't enough carpet for the hall when they came last week so want to have some knowledge before that if possible - I've tried doing a search on the web but it keeps coming up with laminate floor beading. thanks

has anybody come caross this before please as I would like to ask the carpet fitter to redo this but not if it's impossible. thanks0

I havent sorry but had issues with my kitchen floor fitting and left it and wished ide said something so if you don't get a reply on here ide reccomend asking them and see what they say..least then if you have probs you can go back to them saying you had mentioned.
Good luck0 -
If the fitter laid the gripper, surely he would have positioned it far enough away from the beading to fit it as normal? I can't see why beading would be any different from skirting board in this situation
. Perhaps a carpet fitter can clear it up for us????? Or Underlay guru if he's around.
The fitter didn't cut the carpet too short did he, not giving him enough to stretch it over the gripper? If so tell them you want a new carpet laid properly.0 -
the beading's just a thin strip of wood between the bottom of the skirting board and the floor - is that what you were thinking as well? when we checked the other rooms the bedroom was the same ie just laid rather than tucked and also the other bedrooms we had fitted over last 5 years or so - none are "tucked in" - have we been duped?0

yes it with the gripper rod in front of the beading (on old floorboards)0

I'm assuming by tucked in you mean when the carpet is stretched over the gripper then knocked down between the carpet and skirting board with a flat wide chisel type thing (sorry I don't know the technical term, just know what our carpet fitter used), which gives a nice neat finish with no raw edges of the carpet showing, i.e. tucked down between the gripper and beading in your case???
Blimey, not very good at describing things am I, but I know what I mean :rotfl: .
Like this ??? Scroll down to 1st or 4th picture, click to enlarge, scroll down to bottom of picture and move slider bar and you should see the "tucked in" edge. We've got skirting board but I can't see why it would be done any differently if you've got beading in front of the skirting board.
The only time we've ever had any carpet just laid flat is when OH has put an oddment in a cupboard.
Why not PM Underlay_guru and ask him to look at this thread?0 -
The gripper is laid about 1/4" away from the skirting board and the carpet gets trapped in the space between the skirting board and the edge of the gripper. The beading that you have will be stopping the edge of the carpet from getting trapped because it is angled away from the carpet and the carpet has nothing to push against so the edge just pops up.0

yeh tomsmum that's what our is like in the living room where there is no beading but I think the poster after you is probably right although if they'd pointed this out to us we would have removed the beading as it's pointless having it there is you can't see it0

just rung OH and the fitters have been and gone. they can't tuck under because of the beading as we thought. I think the estimator/salesman who came round to give us a price should have had a good look and told us about the possible problems the beading would cause. What do you think? we're not carpet fitters that's why we went to a recommended independent and they came round once we had picked the carpet to price it up.0

I assume that they have stretched the carpet over the grippers otherwise what was the point of putting grippers down in the first place?0
