British Gas Prepayment Problem

Options
Hi all,

Just got my Biritsh Gas payment card in the post today as we moved into the flat on Monday this week. Did what it said in the info and put in the new card to register the card with the meter.

After i have done the above eveything on the meter looks ok apart from one menu which says 'Owed £7.17'

I have phoned british gas up and they said its what the other person left on it and we need to pay that back. I said well as we moved in monday i am not willng to pay for someone else gas as it has nothing to do with me.

They said they can put the £7.17 back on but i need to top up at least 7 to 10 times before it shows up. Can anyone advice on this

Chris

It sounds right to me (I work for BG).
You won't get any gas until that has been paid off, so the quickest way to get gas is to pay this off, and they'll pay you back (7 to 10 times sounds like a lot).
They should have been able to issue the credit already, but iut doesn't know which shop you will use.
I'd top up now (around £10 would give you some gas to use), and if then small amounts on different days, all at the same shop, and i'd expect you to get it on the 3rd or 4th top up.
The alternative if the debt is bigger is to arrange an appointment for someone to come around and reset the meter, but they need around 2-3 days notice to book these, and won't do it for £7.17
  • I have contacted British Gas again, They told me to top up around Sat or Mon at the same paypoint and the £7 should be issued to the card.

Just noticed our electric also shows as owed amount but not much so i gust i will need to do the same

Chris, did you get a new key for the electricity? If not, did you tell them about the amount owed? If they are unaware of it, it probably won't get back to you.
  • I need to tell them about the electric as well. Can they wipe that off as well. Had no key yet but they say its in the post and it will be a new key for us

  • When i moved into my flat in March 2008 both Gas and Electric were on prepayment and there was a debt from the previous tenant on the electric meter..

I had a gas card sent out to me in the post and then i had someone visit me to reset the meters, give me a new electric key and wipe the debt owed by the previous tenant.

I was also with British Gas for gas and electric.
