Hi Kev
We are going through the court process at the moment with a wedding venue (different situation but will be a similar process.
Do you have anything written down from him at all, do you think he is likely to lie and say you havent paid him anything? If it goes to court, it is likely to be his word against yours so you need to everything in writing now. Can you at least show that you withdrew the £150 cash near the date where you paid him?
Send the first letter quoting the supply of goods and services act 1982 - works should be carried out with reasonable care and skill (in your case, it hasnt been carried out at all). You can try consumer direct (linked to trading standards but I expect they will tell you the same thing). If you dont hear from him or get a poor response, send the letter by recorded delivery and give him a time limit to reply (we were advised 7 working days but that feels like a life time). If no response, you need to send a second letter (and a copy of the first) by recorded delivery again giving another 7 days and then if not, you would have to take it to small claims court - probably be cheaper to apply online at www.moneyclaim.guv.uk (I have learnt a lot on here lol!)
Good luck, I hope it works out for you, mates like that aren't worth having.0
