Viewing Deeds

Options
Hi All

I posted on the old style board that I was thinking of getting some chickens. On a link, someone posted that I should check my deeds to make sure that there is not a clause restricting the keeping of livestock. I moved house in May and have a mortgage with the Coventry Building Society. Where would my deeds be? If they are with the Coventry, can I just phone them and ask them if there are any clauses in the deeds?

when we moved, our solicitor had them. we asked and got sent a copy. its a old terraced property, freehold, and the deeds from the turn of the century say we aren't allowed pigs. chickens are fine, and there's no room for pigs, so that's ok.

The deeds can be downloaded from the land registry website for £4. Although you have to pay that will give you a copy to keep; I can't see the building society being happy to read through your deeds and advise you.

We're hoping to buy a semi shortly, and our solicitor sent us a list of things not allowed from a covenant made by an estate company - not sure if it was the original builders, or the people who sold to them.

We can't run a business from the premises, other than doctor or dentist. And we can't keep fowl.

Check your documentation from when you bought - maybe your solicitor wrote you about it then? If you weren't thinking of keeping chooks back then you might well not remember being told you couldn't.

House we're currently living in I think the only things we aren't allowed to do is make tallow candles or run a tannery. (!) But not sure there'd be space for chooks in our backyard anyway!

Make sure it is the LandRegistry.gov.uk site. There are some scam sites out there that charge a lot more for the same thing!

As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.
