Wireless connection with AOL Broadband

Hello,

Looking at getting a wireless network set up at home.

I already have broadband at home using AOL as my ISP, and notice on their website that they offer the set up etc but for £29.99 a Month. This is a little steap as I have recently hammered them down to £9.99 a month for next 2 years.

Is there anyone our there with experiance of setting up a home network using AOL as the ISP but NOT using them to set it all up.

If so, have you had any problems and any suggestions as to the best equipment / software to get?

Many thanks for any advise.

    Hiya,

I set up a wireless network for my mate who is with AOL using a 3com officeconnect wireless router and a 3com pcmcia card - no problems whatsoever.

The only issue he has is when he tries to use AOL support (not brilliant at the best of times), they refuse to help with any ADSL issues as he's not using 'standard equipment'. None of the problems have been anything to do with the 3com equipment and have been easy to fix for him.

    Basically, it works !

    HTH,

If you have not set a router in your current setup, the only extra thing you need to do will be to change the MTU on the router to 1400 (and I think that is the only thing different between AOL compared to the rest of ISPs).

    Hi,

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

I think I will get the Netgear Router (one that they suggest) and see how I get on. Just got to buy a laptop now..!!!

I agree that their "live chat" help can be very frustrating.

    Thanks again

i use a netgear wireless router, and when i rang aol up about it they said i need to be on gold or higher for it to work, so i just went through the settings, changed the mtu to 1400 and for the screen name you HAVE to put yourscreenname@aol.com and your password as normal, that is about it, i am on silver and have not had any problems

I'm on AOL silver and have used both Netgear and Buffalo wireless routers with no problem. My mum uses a Belkin wireless router also with AOL silver with no trouble.

The only thing is you can't be signed in to AOL using two different screen names at once with AOL silver. There is of course no reason why one or more users can't surf the net using internet explorer (or whatever) while one user signs on using the AOL software.

The Netgear routers are easy to set up but if you want to tell me how you got AOL down to 9.99 a month I'll personally take you through it step by step!

    Hi Timmy,

Thanks for your comments. I should be able to sort out the router on me tod but am happy to share with you how I got the AOL Broadband (silver) for £9.99.

In a nut shell I was in a very good position as I have been with them for years...at least 5/6 years plus I think. I phoned up and asked what deals they could offer as they seemed more interested in giving all the best deals to new customers. They first offered me it at £14.79 a month but had to commit for another 12 Months....I did not want to do this as I had been with them for so long anyway. I kept on repeating myself to the lady on the phone (this is what they generally do and what winds us all up when we call. They can just never go "off the script") and I think she must have emailed her boss or something whilst chatting to me as with all the offers she could give to me they just "appeared on her screen"....the final offer was £9.99 but I had to commit to another 24 months. This in fact did not bother me as I was never going to leave in the first place.

I also looked on their own chat forum for info on other people that had got better deals and used one of them as they did not have to commit for another 12 months to get the better deal, which was really why I said I did not want to.

Just Haggle, don't believe them when they say "that's the best I can offer", there is always room for movement (:o) Hope that helps.

Got the laptop today, just waiting for the router to arrive on Monday...YAY..!!
Looking forward to being able to watch the footy and surf the internet in the Lounge!

I've also been with them for 5 or 6 years now so I'll give it a try next week I think. Cheers mate.
