Have a look over at threads on www.overclockers.co.uk, that should give you a better idea of what can be had than here.
I would spec you up what I think would be best, but need to head to work now.0 -

Just having a very quick look, this looks to be the sort of thing you want:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-197-OK&tool=5
Intel Pentium Dual Core E5300 2.66GHz @ 3.00GHz
ATI Radeon HD 4850 1024MB GDDR3
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache
Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX Dual Channel
£494 with windows vista premium
For a computer that is all pre-built, with the correct licensing, this really isn't too bad. We all know you can build better yourself and for less, but for what the OP has stated it will do the job plus a little more for the future.
It has the graphics card for WoW and some other recent games - check
It's in budget - check
Comes with Vista 64bit with W7 upgrade, fully licensed - check
Plenty of storage to start - check
Enough RAM for Vista/W7 - check
CPU - is good although slightly "dated", for doing most things for the OP's son I'm sure it will handle fine.
Overclockers are also very respected when it comes to PC building and knowledge in their area. Good service whenever I have used them and I would recommend them.
I have briefly looked around elsewhere for full system bundles that do a decent job of gaming and can't really find better without having to do some labour yourself, etc.0 -

The overclockers one gets beaten by Aria £439 INC vat and windows! (note memory upgrade to 4gb added in this price!) also better PSU and the new samsung F3 HDD 16-33% faster than standard 500gb.
I order a lot of Aria pre-builts and they usually have them ready in 2-5 days.

No copy of windows and no PSU.0 -
Have a look at YoYo Tech. We are thinking about spending £700-1000 for a new PC tower and will either get one from there or build it ourselves.
I built my PC myself, it's quite easy really, but often there isn't *that much* of a difference between that and buying it new.
YoYo Tech have a shop in Tottenham Court Road - very gaming orientated.0
