Council housing policy - is this right?

I had a housing visit today, she said it is not the councils policy to tell residents that there is a !!!! roach infestation in the block of flats when they move in, but Citizens Advice have told me they have a legal duty to tell me before i took the tenancy.

Who is right?

I am going back to CAB tomorrow but i would like some opinions on this, the environmental health have been out to my flat twice and were unsuccessful, said the roaches would always come back, council claims its very rare anyone reports them, yet environmental health say he comes to this block almost weekly, if i knew there was a roach problem before i accepted this tenancy i would not have moved in.
Owed out = lots.

  • Have you had a go at getting rid of them yourself rather than sitting back and waiting for the council who are generally slow at doing anything?

I have never heard that it needs to be said if there are infestations - did CAB point you to what law/ policy this is from.

Personally I can believe it, but Ive never heard it IYSWIM.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • OP no disrespect but you do (from your other posts) seem to be the type of person who wants someone else to resolve your problems (Cockroaches, Swine Flu etc). I agree it must be pretty nasty to have to live with an infestation and yes, I can see that you must want environmental health to sort it out, but for goodness sake, why don't you get off your backside and try and try and make a start sorting out the mess. Take responsibility for once instead of leaving it to everyone else.

Again? You posted a very, very similar post only a few days ago.......
  • Also is this anything to do with consumer rights? Shouldn't it be on benefits or housing or DIY?

If you spent as much time just focussing on getting rid of the bloody things yourself instead of spouting out mundane questions around here, you'd probably have the problem fixed now.

Killing cockroaches and preventing infestation isn't rocket science. If you don't like the fact that the property has a problem, feel free to exercise your "consumer" right to move out.

You're basically asking us to fund your laziness. Don't expect a desired response.

Why not try in one of the other boards?

Probably one reason nobody is answering your question on the Consumer Rights board is because this board is for questions relating to consumers' rights. Your problem does not involve consumer rights, it involves what you are or are not entitled to demand in the way of benefits.

You've been offered a flat by your Council and have accepted it. Now you wish you hadn't. Undoubtedly, someone somewhere knows whether or not you have the legal right to insist on another offer because of the roaches. My guess -- probably not, since you say that the whole building is affected. If the council was handing out exchanges because of these roaches, everybody who is bothered by them would be moving out. But that's just my guess. If you post your question on the Benefits board you might find someone who actually knows.

Alternatively, why don't you just be thankful you've got a flat and do as numerous people have suggested and get rid of the roaches yourself? That's what the rest of us have to do.
