Special needs trust.

Hi,
I was involved in an accident at work a couple of years ago which effectively ended my career. I was a self employed HGV1 owner driver.

I suffered neck and back injuries.I was told to stop working by my GP.

The loss of my business has incurred debts amounting to 15k+.

When I depleted my savings I made a claim for income support which I am receiving as well as Disability living allowance, low rate care.

I have a solicitor building a case against the company who were responsible for the accident. In a recent update letter he mentioned that if the claim was successful, a special needs trust fund be set up to save me losing my entitlement to benefit.

What is a special needs trust fund. How does it work. How will it affect my debts. How do you gain access to funds and is the access limited. If the claim was successful, would I for instance be able to buy a car to the standard I had when I was working. Would I be able to take a holiday, would I be able to spend as I saw fit?

I would like to thank you in advance for your answers.

Thanks,

Scotty.
