Paying final student utility bills

Not sure if I am posting in the right place.
Son is back at home after university. Letting agents did final meter readings for their rented house( 4 occupants). Gas Bill (£40) was sent to our home address, son's name not actually on bill but as it was so small he paid it and said would contact other tenants to get £10 from each, which of course he hasn't received.

I contacted lettings agent to say hadn't received final electricity bill, they chased it and we received bill for £ 136.00. I called Eon and said would pay 25% of bill for son's share with note enclosed. Eon said had contact details for all but one tenant.

My question is, if other tenants do not pay their share of electricity bill, will this be reflected in son's credit score if default notices are sent out for balance of bill.

Dont know the correct terminology but all 4 are liable for the bill collectively or as individuals so if they can only contact one of the 4 that person gets stuck with having to pay the lot. In terms of bad credit score I suspect this would apply to them all even if you son pays 25% because he is still liable for the 75% if they can get in contact with the others.

    Hi Turbo,

Spiro is spot on, if all four names are on the account, and one pays that persons name isn’t likely to be removed as a result. All known tenants are liable for payment of the full amount and would be chased until payment made. :o

If the remaining three tenants don’t pay their share and were untraceable, the tenant that has already paid their share is still as much liable to pay the remaining amounts as the others.

Thanks Brian, I will give Eon a call. Do you think they will tell me if any other amounts have been paid towards the bill.

    Hi Turbo,

As long as you are named on the account you are entitled to be told the balance, and if any payments have been made, and you can ask for a copy of the bills.

You’ll get a better idea of where you stand by asking some questions, and you won’t need to commit to paying anything there and then, although don’t be surprised if the agent you speak to asks for payment! ;)
