We changed on moving areas late into the pregnancy, but we did have to change our midwife aswell.
  • when i first got pregnant with my daughter(she 1yrs now) i first choose a newly built hospital, my midwife even though she was based at that hospital advised me not to as everyone had the same idea as me and there just wasnt enough staff to cope, i choose another hospital down the road and im so glad i did as there was only at most 5 other ladies giving birth on my ward and had midwifes just waiting about for me, coming in having a chats, bringing cups of tea ect.

my friend on the other hand had to go to the newly built hospital as she was classed as a high risk pregnancy and she said it was horrible she hardly saw any nurses/midwifes as they was rushing in and out seeing other ladies in labour

i would reconmend getting experiences from people first before you switch, and im sure you midwife wouldnt mind about you wanting to change so late in the pregnancy, its your body your choice, they can advise you on which is best but they cannot force you

  • Hi.. yes u can.. i decided to nt go to my hospital as its AWEFUL!!
I went to one in the next county( princess royal in farnborough, kent) instead of redhill hospital.. I went to my doc and she was real narky about it.. but i stuck to my guns and she referred me(wrote to them) if she hadnt done.. i would of refered myself.. they did ask 4 a reason though- so be prepared with one.. even if u have to fib and say its ur staying wiv family nr to this hospital at time of birth(they wnt check, promise) Im glad i did.. i had a fantastic birth and the best choice imho
    Good Luck & congrats!!!
  • You'll probably find your community midwife is GP based and stay the same. The hospital will just contact her when you go home.

It's best to get booked into the new place well before you have the baby as they will want to get your medical history on record and may want to repeat some blood tests, I know you've probably had them done already but most hospitals like to do their own blood grouping tests just to be really sure and avoid mistakes.
However there's always circumstances where people turn up in labour when they are away from home and the systems do cope.
