I cant vouch for this as I haven't tried it

Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. It’s easy to tell if your PC is secure — when you’re green, you’re good. It’s that simple.

Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so that you are free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want—without interruptions or long computer wait times.

Apparently quite good and a direct competitor to the free version of AVG etc. You shouldn't install this if you have an AV package installed at the moment.

    Verdict

Microsoft Security Essentials has a pleasing interface, is simple to use, and has appropriate defaults. Its warning pop-ups let you deal with an issue quickly or dig in for details. If Microsoft can improve the detection rate a bit - and rev up the scan speed more than a bit - Security Essentials could turn out to be a real contender in the free antivirus arena.

    Duration of ownership: 2 weeks
    Strengths:
A pretty good detection rate. Fast and extremely easy to use.
    Weaknesses:
No heuristics or any big features just a small anti-virus/spyware.
    Overall Evaluation:
Quite a good antivirus. Because its free I thought it might have been a bit bad bit but its good for free.

From the review to which I linked above:
    Microsoft Security Essentials review

An effective if somewhat slow utility, Microsoft Security Essentials is a solid contender in the free antivirus space.
