Faulty Playstation 3 - SUCCESS!

Many of you may have read stories about faulty Playstation 3 consoles. Some people seem to be having success, others are pulling their hair out.

I bought mine from Game in late 2007. It's now 20 months old, and suddenly stopped reading any discs. (I've not experienced the Yellow Light of Death that many gamers have suffered from.)

After talking to an assistant in store for their advice, I was fobbed off with the old story, "It's Sony's problem, as it's out of guarantee."
Rather than argue in store, I composed a letter, sent it to the store manager, and claimed my rights under Goods of Sales Act 1979, stating that the console is not fit for purpose, and would like a repair or replacement.

A few days later I received a call from head office, asking for the console details, and that I would receive a letter within a few more days.

The result: I'm getting a FREE repair! My console is being collected in a few days. I do need to clarify how long the guarantee of the repair lasts... just in case it fails again.

If anyone else is suffering a similar problem with their console, I would urge you to try the same.

Good luck!

  • Any chance of posting the letter? (So to speak!)

Woudnt sales of good cover the first 6 months? =\
  • I'll copy the letter and post it here later. But basically, it stated that I am a loyal customer (which is true), and I'm unhappy with their reluctance to help me. I claimed the console was not fit for purpose, and under the Sales of Goods Act 1979, I requested a repair or like-for-like replacement. I gave them 7 days to respond.

Yes, the Sales of Goods covers your console if it's under 6 months old, in fact I think anything up to 6 months old is legally entitled for a refund. Anything after 6 months usually goes through the repair/replace/refund process.
