Really stupid question - going wireless

Options
Just bought the Netgear Wireless G Router to set my laptop up as wireless (asked for advice in Comet and this is what they sold me). Followed the easy step by step instructions, all good.

Thing is, and I know I sound stupid here - I have more wires than when I started?! How do I actually go wireless?!?

V Confused, any help mch appreciated!!

You should have a cable going from your Router to the telephone or cable socket and a power supply lead from the mains socket to the router. What other cables do you have?

  • You need to connect the laptop to the router to set up a wireless connection but after that you can remove it. Have you tried doing that to see if you can access the internet without the network cable?

You usually need to connect your computer to the router with a cable at first to put in your ISP details and give your wireless network a name and encryption password etc. Once you've done that you should be able to disconnect the cable. Make sure your laptop's wireless card is enabled and then get it to search for available networks. Let us know which operating system you're running and we'll take it from there!...
  • Thanks everyone. I have disconnected the laptop now and all fine.
BUT I still seem to have a whole load of wires, and 2 modems that need to still be plugged in. The black Virgin modem has 3 wires still attached, and the wireless modem has 2. Does that sound right?

The whole point of going wireless is because we have a crawling 1 year old! As it stands though, we have wires stretching right across the room from where the tv & Virgin box is, to where the plug sockets are on the opposite side (There are no spare plug sockets where the tv is!) Help!

So you have a cable modem (Virgin) connected to a wireless router? There should be a cable from the cable socket to the modem, a cable from the modem to the router and a power cable going to each. If you have no spare power sockets near the TV, buy a four-way strip from Poundland.

  • That's what we have. Already have a 4 way strip so can't have a another! Oh well, thanks for your help.

If you have a twin wall socket, you can have two. Or you can get a 6-way.

  • Thank very much Fifer. Am a bit naive. Thought wireless literally meant wireless - still seem to be lots of wires to me :)

If you looked under my desk you'd be horrified. I have 3-way adaptor plugged into 4-way plugged into a 4-way that goes to one socket, and a 6-way plugged into a 4-way plugged into another socket.

However, I did total up the wattage from everything plugged in and it's all perfectly within safe limits :)

I'm not familiar with cable broadband connections but won't the Netgear router take whatever feed is coming into your house directly and do the whole job with just the one box?
