Monitor wont stay on

Options
Basically I bought a monitor nearly 3 years ago cost 200 pounds and its been working no problem until up to last week.

If I turn it on it goes off like 10 seconds later .. and wont stay on. Is there any chance I can get it fixed if I paid or just buy another? Its too good to throw away to be honest.

Could anyone recommend me with what the problem may be?

Many thanks!

    Hi.

Does it completely switch off (no lights or any sign of life), or does it go into a standby mode?

Does it display anything on the screen just before it goes off?

Might be useful to know what make and model of monitor it is, and whether you've tried it on another PC.
  • Is the connection between the monitor and PC secure? It sounds more like it's going into standby mode as it isn't recognising the PC is turned on. It's obviously getting power as it does turn on, if only for a short while.

  • Sorry for not putting much information I dont know much about computers to be honest.

We have tried it on another computer and it still goes off. It displays the desktop for around 10 seconds then just goes off. When the monitor is switched on there is a blue light when its off theres a yellow light. When it goes off the yellow light goes on.

The connection is secure and we have tried everything possible. To be honest I dont have a clue what the make of the monitor is I know its a phillips but thats all.

    Thanks for your replies
  • Hi Sharon
"I don't know much about computers" but do you know where to look for a manufactures name and model number, not rocket science is it.

My friends monitor goes off if not in the correct video output (there were two to chose) and that's unusual to turn off, I expect to see an amber light (no video signal), my mates monitor is a Belinea, CRT.

Not worth repairing. Is it a CRT type then??
" any chance I can get it fixed if I paid" - I would have thought so.

Could be a loose video card in the PC, have you tried the monitor on a desktop or laptop?

    Sharon,

If there's a problem with the monitor, it's starting to sound like it might be in the part that detects whether or not a signal from the PC is present. But first we need to rule out the possibility that the monitor is being physically blocked from getting the correct signals from the PC.

Unplug the monitor from the PC and have a good look at the cable that plugs into the PC. First of all, is it a blue-coloured plug about an inch and a half across? Secondly, look closely at the little pins inside the end of the connector - are they all present and unbent? (if it's a blue VGA-type connector, there should be 15 pins, arranged in 3 rows).

This will rule out a problem with the physical connection.

Have you tried connecting a different monitor to the PC in question? If that works, it will rule out a problem with your PC's graphics card.

If we can rule out all of the above, then the problem lies within the brains of the monitor itself. That might be fixable, but it might be cheaper to buy another monitor.

As you bought it within the last few years, I guess it's a flat-panel sort of monitor, is that right?

It would still help to know if the monitor displays a message before shutting down - does it do that?

It would also still help to know the make and model number. If it's not displayed on the front of the monitor somewhere, then you'll probably find it on a sticker on the back.
