I wanted to change my line rental from BT to SKY. I thought it would be simple but because of the wrong information being given by SKY (They told me to phone BT and cancel my line) its got into a mess. I then phoned BT and told them this and then re rung SKY and they said NO THIS IS WRONG, you need and active line. So i then rang up BT and they said its not a problem as the contract hasnt run out and all will be ok. But is wasnt, as BT still decided to cancel my line even though i told them not to. Subsequently because of this SKY have cancelled my talk package and broadband package. Anyway a month down the line i have a new account and new telephone number by BT (they couldnt re instate my old account even though i got through to an indian call centre and they said the could). So now ive got my new account BT have now decided to bill me for 3months line rental in advance as well as a processing fee as i had to cancel my direct debit and start a new one and this couldnt be done until i got the first bill from them (thats what they said). And SKY are charging me for all the calls made to SKY as i was with them when i was trying to sort all this mess out. I feel i should be getting compensation from both BT and SKY for the almighty !!!! UP theyve both made. Im in the process of complaining at the moment. But the only reason i decided to change my line rental from BT to SKY was because it would be £1 cheaper a month and i would only get one bill. Wot a palava. Has anybody got into this mess and what was the outcome. Any replies would be gratetful as im at the end of my tether.

Money saving is one thing but I have never understood the 'one bill is better' argument.

Anyway, it sounds like you're now in a new 12 month contract with BT - so don't change to Sky until that's up.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

i dont understand why you had so much trouble.
When i wanted to change my line rental from BT to Sky I informed Sky, they took details, 3 weeks later BT was cancelled by Sky then SKY was up and running.
All sorted smoothly by SKy - deal done.
I was already with Sky with tv, skytalk and broadband.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

The op asked BT to cancel the line ( the line has to be active with no stop order for another service provider to take over)
Its up to the new provider to advise on the transfer process and sky told the op to cancel the BT line. which they did.

op says that SKY told them to cancel with BT so really its SKYS error

  • I tried emailing but i dont know my POP3 code. Basically what has happened now since i emailed BT direct is they are going to waive the fees and one phone call. But im still not happy about this as theyve said i have to go on quarterly direct debit and not monthly as i was before and didnt give an explanation why. I also feel that i should be compensated for the calls ive had to make to SKY for the reinstatement of my talk package and broadband which they cancelled because i had no line. I therefore feel im still out of pocket as im paying for 3months line rental in advance as well as the calls to SKY but if BT hadnt cancelled my line i would only be paying this months line rental and nothing else. I think the least BT should do is give me a months free line rental for all the calls and hastle ive had not to mention no phone line for about 2 weeks.
