corrupt file

my laptop keeps shutting down saying corrupt file perfetch when i try to do a chkdsk it gets so far and then shuts down. any ideas what to do?

    It looks like you could have a failing hard disk - it's a good time to back up anything important before you try fixing anything.

    Is chkdsk running from within Windows or scheduled on a reboot.
  • thanks for reply.chkdsk was on restart eventually finish task. should have mentioned fan seems to be on all the time and cpusage is high. also laptop still switches off after few mins. not getting hot tho. wot does it mean cpusage is high. any answers grateful for.

    CPU usage high means that it working hard doing something! That would tie in with the fan being on as well.
    It could be that the system is struggling to read the hard drive, but there could be something else going on as well. Are you up to date with Antivirus, and what operating system are you using?

    running avg free 8.5. and windows defender. many thanks
  • Try deleting the files with the file extension .pf within the Prefetch directory in the following location:

    C:\Windows\Prefetch

    Windows will recreate the files as necessary.
