  • Thanks for all your advice guys - really appreciated. The company he was employed by actually consolidated all their production to their headquarters in Ireland. The plants they had in both America and in South Wales closed down as a result to try and make manufacturing of JCB buckets and other construction equipment that he used to make cheaper. Unfortunately, relocation wasnt offered to anyone as part of the redundancy package otherwise him and I may have well taken it and be living in Ireland now.

He was told that a company called REACT training would pay for him to re-train as something else, if he was able to find a company that was willing to employ him and release the training funding. The first job he had this year back in March nearly took on the funding but the manager pulled out at the last minute saying he anticipated there to be too much paperwork involved.....about a week later he was let go from the company anyway due to lack of work to go around. Hes considered doing a coded welding course before but if he'd used his REACT funding apparently he wouldve had to pay about £500 upfront himself, I may be wrong with this figure but I know he had to put some money into it himself which he was a bit wary of as he still had his credit card to pay off and an outstanding car loan. Like Speedster quoted, you have to retake the training every few years to attain the coded welding qualification which is more money year on year. Unless he was to find work in this field, I doubt it would be of much benefit him doing this. Thanks for the suggestion all the same though. I dont think he should rule it out just yet, maybe its something to think about in the future when hes back on his feet financially.

Regarding the possibility of him having dyslexia, Ive suggested he looks into going to an Adult Education literacy class to at least brush up on spelling, handwriting and general skills that most of us take for granted....but he wasnt having any of it.....men can be sooo stubborn. Sorry guys! Its hard as every time he has to fill a form in, he asks me to complete it for him incase they send it back to him coz they cant read it!! I feel like his mother on times.

He has considered going self employed but he hasnt really got anywhere he could use as a workshop. The garage in his house is shared between him and his dad. Maybe when he or we get our own place, he may be able to pursue setting something up? He went to the job centre today to sign on and has made an appointment to speak to someone about going on some free courses run by the job centre. My friend has been out of work on and off for the past year and has done loads of things, all free. My OH hasnt done anything! Hopefully that'll make him feel just a little bit better about himself....the way he goes on anyone would think hes an 80 yr old man!!
  • If he's thinking of a career change he can make an appointment with Nextstep for a face to face interview, or by telephone with Learndirect; both of these services are free. In addition, Nextstep would be able to help him improve his jobsearch skills in his current employment area, if that is what he decides.
