Can you put a Crock Pot in the oven?

Hi

I am making Beef Casserole for dinner tonight. We only have one casserole dish but it is too small to fit all of the ingrediants plus dumplins inside it (I know as I tried to cook it last week but had to leave the dumplins out)
Anyway we do have a slow cooker. It is now too late to cook the casserole in the crock pot as obviously it can take at least 5 hrs plus.
Could I take the ceramic dish (or whatever it is made from) out of the slow cooker and use it as a casserole dish in a normal oven? will it be able to withstand the heat from a normal oven? has anyone here tried this before?

Many thanks

could you cook the dumplings on the stove in some of the gravy/liquid? then just put them into casserole dish before you serve.
  • I use mine in the oven all the time. It's brown ceramic with a pyrex-type lid, and no plastic knob. I've just checked it, and it doesn't say anything on it about being oven-proof or not. I mostly use it for casseroles (so fairly low heat settings) but I have had it higher for browning potato toppings etc to finish off. Don't have the original instructions - it's about 30 years old (!), but maybe you can find yours......

As far as i know, the crock pot from the slow cooker will crack under the extreme heat. many here have tried and its broken!

My crockpot (Morphy Richards 1.6ltr) often goes in the oven - without the lid - and I've had no problems. I mainly do it to brown sliced potatoes on top of slow cooked food under the grill.

I did use my previous crock pot in the oven....no problem for the pot but the handle on the lid melted. You live and learn. :o

Grimbo Green, I think it will depend on the individual crock pot.

  • I've had a google about, and some say 'don't' and some don't mention it at all. Mainly the worry seems to be about sudden changes in temperature ...... putting a cold pot into a very high oven, or a hot pot straight into the fridge.
  • I've always put mine in the oven and I put it on the hob to brown things as well! I did the same with my old one as well except I used to have to take the nob off that one (it unscrewed) as it was plastic.

    Maybe I've just been lucky!

    I did this too.
The lid handle melted but the pot was ok.

I bought a crock pot in early January and have cooked a few casseroles in it, the first being bland, but they have improved each time. My problem is that under the plastic handle area in the glass lid, condensation builds up and takes days to disappear. I didn't think this was a very healthy thing to happen, I worry about bacteria building up in there. I phoned the customer care line for crock pot to ask if there was anything I could do about it and was told that they'd never had this complaint before, which I find hard to believe. I asked if I should loosen the screw on the underside of the lid, but they said not to, however they gave me no other advice. Has anyone on here ever had this problem? The lid is glass, with a round plastic insert in the middle, the handle on top and a flat area of plastic on the underside, if I'm explaining that properly, and it's on that flat area on the underside that gets condensation build up.

Sorry, I should have said, the condensation builds up between the plastic underside and the glass, hope to hear from someone soon!
