My walls leak ???

Can anyone help??

When it rains the internal wall in my house gets very damp/wet. I've checked the upstairs bathroom and cannot see any leaks from inside the house.
I’ve repaired the guttering (which was fractured) and the problem still persists!! I was wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar problem and whether there is anything I can put on the exterior wall to prevent any penetration from the rain(If that is the problem).

Thanks

Far from an expert on this but I had a similar problem. I was told that it could be because my walls needed 'repointing' (cement between bricks needed replacing/filling). I have been lucky enough to have cavity wall insulation put in this month (received a grant while on working tax credit) so I'm hoping that although I haven't had the repointing done that this will help the problem.

'If that is the problem' - you can treat the outside walls with a couple of coats of clear silicone.

But that's the last resort and really only works (I'm assuming you have solid / rubble filled walls?) if the outer skin has gone porous (normally stone). But you need to check the pointing and the roof where it overlaps the outer wall first. No point doing the silicone if there's a structure cause - and you need to check that first
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • Can you tell us if there is a adjoining wall or chimney above the affected area and tell us which room its in?

There are 3 forms of damp - rising, penetrating and capillary. Rising if your damp course has been bridged; penetrating if driving rain finding way inside and capillary if the water seeping through porous brick work.

Give as much detail as possible and will try and help!:j

    Sorry I didn't reply sooner.
The adjoining wall is to an entry (the property is a mid terrace). The room that the wall that is damp after it rains is the living room entrance.
    Thanks for your help.

I cant work it out off that?
  • Likely culprits are lead flashings, gutterings or brickwork that needs repointing. It may be as simple as painting the wall with Thompsons water seal.
  • Yes I would agree with woodbutcher, get the outside repointed and paint water seal on
